Ferrari F40 chassis #87144 left the factory in October of 1990, destined for Steve Harris Imports (Ferrari of Salt Lake City). It was sold new soon after it arrived in Utah, on March 6, 1991. We are still researching who purchased this F40 new, however we do know it stayed in the immediate area.
It was sold to its second owner four years later, on March 2, 1995, to Gold Strike Resorts founder David R. Belding of Las Vegas, Nevada/Boulder, Colorado. Belding had just sold Gold Strike Resorts and treated himself to this barely used 485 mile F40. In turn, Belding only put 315 additional miles on the car during his nine years of ownership. Belding realized the F40 was special and started keeping receipts from 600 miles on, in 2001.
Lake Forest Sportscars Ltd. of Lake Forest, Illinois sold the F40 to its third owner, Brian Gibbs of New Orleans, Louisiana. Gibbs owned the F40 from 2004 to 2012 and is responsible for the bulk of the mileage currently on the clock. He sold to Ferrari of Houston, where it was reported to have 6,699 miles and a stack of service history from the two previous owners.
In 2012, Ferrari of Houston sold the F40 to respected car collector and real estate developer of Calgary, Alberta, in Canada. We purchased chassis #87144 from him with 8,017 miles and fresh service history from Riegel Tuning in Calgary. As is standard when we purchase any car, we had it shipped to our Ferrari dealer in Vancouver for a full inspection, service and applied for Ferrari Classiche certification.
The car recorded 8,042 miles at the time of research, which is the actual mileage from new, and has never been raced or tracked. In fact, its maintenance history is very impressive, with service records for the last sixteen years, from the respected Lake Forest Sportscars Ltd. (Ferrari dealer, Lake Bluff, Illinois), Lindsay Automotive (Louisiana), Ferrari of Houston, Reigel Tuning (Calgary), and Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver accompanying it, along with a clean CARFAX report, and the correct books, car cover, tire kit and tools. Importantly, it is also California smog compliant, and in fact is presently road-registered and street-legal.
Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver (FMOV) completed the inspection required for the highly important Ferrari Classiche Certification in March of 2017. The process can take up to six months and we will happily provide the certificate/book to the next caretaker of F40 #87144.
The 213 USA specification Ferrari F40s are the rarer, more advanced and thus more valuable than the Rest of World production cars. This particular F40 has very little mileage, an impressive and up-to-date service history, and is impeccably well preserved in original condition. The single layer of Rosso Corsa Ferrari paint shows extremely well. We had a clear 3M rock guard applied to the front of the car to further preserve the paint. The seats were professionally re-upholstered last year, as the material and foam is known to degrade over time.
It is ready for a new caretaker and is ready to be driven. These cars suffer with lack of use and with 8,042 miles you will not depreciate the value by driving a few hundred miles a year. This is recommended for longevity of the mechanical components and we can think of no better way to experience a few hundred miles each summer. This is a veritable “blue chip” collector grade F40. It is a great place to park an investment, and enjoy a car that was and still is a dream to most car enthusiasts around the world. It is an icon for an entire generation and will go down in history as one of the most important Ferrari to leave Maranello.
