The Shelby Daytona has perhaps one of the most interesting and important stories in automotive racing. The Daytona is the lovechild of Carrol Shelby, a successful race car driver turned automotive designer. Mr. Shelby was an icon of his generation and was involved in some of Ford Performance’ greatest projects including the AC ‘Shelby’ Cobra, Shelby Mustang, and even the GT40.

Based on the AC Cobra, the ‘low drag’ beautiful Daytona body was a necessary modification to allow the Fords to catch the Ferrari LeMans cars of the time on the Mulsanne straight at Circuit de la Sarthe, France. Only 6 original coupes were ever made now fetching over $8,000,000 at auction, making them some of the most sought after race cars in existence. Factory Five has taken Shelby’s original recipe and modernized it using CAD (computer aided design) to increase overall size by 6% with more structural rigidity and safety while remaining true to the original shape, and driving experience.

Pull the internal door handle, open the astonishingly light door and drop into the floor mounted racing seat. A four point harness holds you unconditionally while stretching for the quick release steering wheel resting on the dash, clicking it into place. Turn the key and the 5.7L V8 rumbles into life with ferocious intensity. Blip the throttle and the whole car shakes with excitement. Grab first gear and the shifter clicks into place with no movement, ensuring you’ll never miss a gear. Give it some revs, release the clutch and just like that you’re pulling away in a 60’s LeMans car. Get up in the revs and the roar coming out of the side exhaust is almost as big as the smile on your face. Shift into second, get on the gas and 450 Horsepower propels this 2,500 lbs Daytona along at a speed that makes most modern day Corvettes feel slow.

While modern day supercars are built in the hundreds, Factory Five’s 65 coupe are built in dozens, making them much more exclusive than even their Italian counterparts. Beyond exclusivity the 65 Daytona is an icon of American race cars. It’s a reminder that with determination and motivation, one can achieve great things with limited resources.
