Chassis 198.040.5500617

Featuring a full concours-level restoration by Mercedes-Benz Classic in Irvine, California, completed in June 2020 to factory specification. This Gullwing is confirmed numbers-matching by Mercedes-Benz, and comes with a copy of the original factory build sheet.

The restoration included complete disassembly, complete rebuild of all components, both mechanical and cosmetic, back to factory specification and correct finishes. The original engine was upgraded with the higher compression NSL-type sports camshaft configuration as part of its rebuilt. This Gullwing is equipped with fully restored belly pans, full factory tool kit, period correct reproduction “Karl Baisch” style 2-piece luggage set, door window bag as well as period correct seat belts.

This numbers-matching 300SL Coupe released by the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim factory on August 24, 1955. It was shipped to Max Hoffman in New York City, the official Mercedes-Benz foreign agent/importer for the USA.

The fourth owner of this Gullwing first brought it to Mercedes-Benz Classic for a full restoration. Restoration entailed the complete disassembly and restoration of every component, assembly, body, nut, bolt, etc., i.e. a 100% restoration. The vehicle was restored to original factory specifications with some period correct upgrades. The engine upgraded to NSL-type Sport Camshaft configuration. Added accessories are a period correct seatbelt set and a new set of 2-piece luggage for the Gullwing.

The restoration was completed in June of 2020. In total the owners spent $1,114,005.00 USD to finish the project. This Gullwing is 100% factory correct with little signs of use beyond break-in period of approximately 500 miles, performed by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.
