1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 RS – Van Nuys Built, Rotisserie Restored, Period-Correct DZ302

This exceptional 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 RS was assembled at the Van Nuys, California plant and spent the majority of its life in the southern United States, preserving its structural integrity. Imported into Canada in October 2020, it subsequently underwent a comprehensive, no-expense-spared rotisserie restoration, completed in the fall of 2021.

Remarkably original, this Z/28 retains its factory sheet metal, including the original floor pans, trunk, and body panels. Never chopped or modified. The subframe and underside present in near new condition, consistent with its dry southern heritage. Finished in its correct code 51 Dusk Blue with white rally stripes, the exterior features both front and rear spoilers, functional cowl induction hood and air cleaner assembly, and full Rally Sport (RS) trim—highlighted by the iconic hidden headlamps and unique RS grille. The headlight doors have been upgraded to the reliable Detroit Speed electric conversion system, while the original vacuum components remain in place for authenticity. Correct T3 headlamps are also installed.

Power comes from a period-correct, date-matching DZ302 V8 engine, assembled at the Norwood Plant. The engine pad is untouched and fully numbers-matching. The motor was sourced by the Canadian owner at the time of importation and was completely disassembled for inspection. Internals confirmed to be correct, including forged pistons, special connecting rods, and steel crankshaft. Dated November 14, 1968, the engine aligns with the car’s assembly in the fourth week of January 1969.

Performance enhancements were tastefully and professionally integrated, including a DZ-spec Howard hydraulic roller camshaft and lifters, roller rockers, 7.150” pushrods (for ideal valvetrain geometry), and a Pertronix ignition system with upgraded distributor. Original-style valve covers were meticulously re-skinned by Gerry MacNeish at Camaro High Performance LLC to factory appearance. A set of long-tube headers—a dealer-available option in-period—feeds a custom 2.5" polished stainless MagnaFlow exhaust system. Engine dyno break-in was performed in January 2021, delivering 387 hp at 6,300 rpm and 361.9 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm. Timing is set at 37° total, 10° initial, on 94-octane fuel. The builder advised against exceeding 7,000 rpm.

The original M21 close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission has been fully rebuilt, along with the factory shifter for crisp, positive engagement. Power is delivered through a rebuilt 12-bolt Positraction rear axle with 3.73:1 gearing, new gears, bearings, and a new posi unit.

Wheels are restored 15” Rally units wrapped in five correct E70-15 Goodyear Wide Tread GT tires—exclusive to the Z/28 in 1969. Inside, the car features a completely new, concours-quality Legendary interior. Appointments include the 8,000 rpm tachometer, full center console gauge package, rosewood steering wheel, and tilt column. Notably, this car was ordered with radio and clock delete options, contributing to its purposeful character.

All chrome and stainless trim have been either restored or replaced to a high standard, presenting in outstanding condition. Every component, cosmetic and mechanical, has been refurbished, replaced, or renewed with exceptional attention to detail.

Since completion, the car has seen minimal use and remains in pristine, well-maintained condition—a superb example of a highly desirable and authentically restored 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS.
